Buying meme coins with a credit card came with an unexpected perk: some users could earn ordinary credit card points and cash back on their crypto purchases.
Visa is now moving to close that loophole.
The issue centered on how meme coin purchases were classified by payment processors. Some Crossmint-powered checkouts used merchant category code (MCC) 5815, a category intended for digital media such as movies, music and audiobooks, rather than a crypto-specific category.
That meant a meme coin purchase could look to the card network like a normal digital-media purchase.
Users of Robinhood Wallet and Fomo could purchase certain meme coins using credit cards through Apple Pay or Google Pay.
According to The Block's testing, transactions made with Visa and Mastercard cards were classified as digital-media purchases and could earn normal card rewards, including points and cash back.
The classification mattered because crypto purchases are generally treated differently under card-network rules.
Chase challenged the classification after reviewing a Visa transaction, saying it had been assigned the wrong merchant category and should not have earned rewards. The matter was subsequently taken up with Visa.
Visa has reportedly instructed payment processors to stop using the digital-media category for these meme coin purchases.
Processors have been given a grace period to wind down the practice, with the deadline expected during the week of September 21, 2026. After that, affected purchases will have to be processed under cryptocurrency rules rather than the digital-media category.
That means the loophole allowing users to earn ordinary card rewards from these purchases is expected to disappear.
The meme coin purchases themselves are not necessarily being banned.
The main change is how the transactions are processed.
Once they are treated as crypto transactions, they will fall under Visa's existing cryptocurrency rules and restrictions. The reward points and cash back that resulted from the previous classification are the part of the workaround that is being closed.
Crossmint, however, said its procedures had not changed and that it would update them if Visa formally changed its guidance.
The change highlights how much can depend on something most card users never see: the merchant category code attached to a transaction.
For meme coin buyers, the easy rewards loophole may be coming to an end. For crypto payment platforms, it means meme coin purchases will have to fit more clearly within the card networks' existing treatment of cryptocurrency.
